Grants
UVic's EcoCAR challenge team received financial support from the alumni association.
Alumni grants are allocated by the Grants and Awards Committee of the UVic Alumni Association. Grants are available for purposes which:- enhance the quality of education at UVic; improve campus life;
- help students and recent graduates (last five years);
- otherwise support the university.
Projects and purposes considered are those, which would not otherwise be provided through normal funding channels.
Application Deadlines
2012-13 Application Deadlines:
Grant requests will be considered if received on or before the dates listed below. If you know the date of your event or activity, be sure to apply for a grant well in advance as the committee may not review your application until possibly two weeks after a deadline. Grant requests will not be given for an event that has already occurred. All applicants will be notified of the committee's decision.
April 5, 2012
June 1, 2012
September 7, 2012
November 2, 2012
February 1, 2013
Guidelines:
Guidelines have been established over time to assist the committee in evaluating grant requests. While these guidelines are generally followed, the committee reserves the right to evaluate each request on its own merits and decide accordingly.
Preference is given to purposes which:
| groups | Benefit more than one student or individual. Purposes which benefit single individuals may be considered only when the project has special significance for the university, the project has unusual social significance, or unusual costs are involved. |
| one-time | Require a one time allocation of funds to be completed or to become self sustaining. While second grants have been awarded for some projects, this is considered only in exceptional circumstances and should not be expected. |
| partial funding | Involve matching funds. Applicants are encouraged to seek support from additional sources to complete the total funding requirement. |
| service to alumni | Result in a direct benefit to alumni groups or organizations, i.e. an article in the TORCH, a slide presentation to alumni, a musical performance at an alumni function, etc. |
| equipment | Involve equipment purchases that will benefit many students. |
| cultural exchange | Result in a beneficial, intellectual exchange between cultures, eg. Youth Challenge International, AFS Interculture Canada, etc. Funds for this purpose may be limited each year. |
Repeat Grants:
Projects or programs which provide a valuable service for alumni, students,
or alumni chapters and branches, may be considered for repeat funding.
Funds for this purpose may be limited each year.
Grants will not be considered for:
| illegal purpose | A purpose which would result in a contravention of university or government laws and policies. |
| personal and professional development |
Purposes that solely benefit the applicant. Eg. Completions of coursework, to conduct research, cover travel expenses, attend conferences, etc. |
past events |
A project which has already commenced, or event which has occurred. |
overhead |
General overhead and operating expenses |
| no specific purpose |
Projects where no specific use is identified for alumni funds, i.e. when the funding would simply offset a project deficit. |
Recognition
It is expected that the application of alumni funds will result in positive recognition for the University of Victoria and the Alumni Association. Some form of planned recognition for the financial participation of the Alumni Association should be incorporated into the funding proposal, i.e. a plaque on donated equipment or alumni logo on an event program, etc.
Applications
Proposals for funding should include:
- The name, address, phone number (and e-mail address if available) of the applicant. If a university department, the FAST account number to be credited;
- A clear statement of the expected outcome of the program or project and who will benefit from it;
- A complete budget, including other sources of funding which are committed or have been applied for;
- The amount requested;
- The date when the funds will be required;
- Planned recognition of the grant;
- Planned reporting back to the Alumni Association.
